Ravi Shankar was born into a Kashmiri Pandit family; his father Pandit Pran Nath was a prominent musician and professor at the Trinity College in Kolkata and later became the Principal Conservator of Music for the Government of India. His mother was a singer and music teacher at the Durga Sangeet Sabha, a music academy located in Calcutta. Ravi Shankar also had two sisters: Mrs.
Shanta Kumar (a classical vocalist), and Mrs. Sudha Mitra (a sitarist).
